Valdecoxib is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) and a selective cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitor. It was used for its anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic properties in the management of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and primary dysmenorrhea. Valdecoxib works by inhibiting the COX-2 enzyme, which is responsible for the synthesis of prostaglandins involved in inflammation and pain. Unlike non-selective NSAIDs, it does not inhibit platelet aggregation due to its selectivity for COX-2 over COX-1. The drug was developed as an oral therapy but was withdrawn from major markets in 2005 due to safety concerns related to increased risk of serious cardiovascular events and severe skin reactions[1][3][7][8].
