Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Valerian extract is a botanical extract derived from the roots and rhizomes of *Valeriana officinalis*. Developed by Wuhan United Pharmacy, it is formulated as "Rike Valerian Extract Capsules" (瑞克®缬草提取物胶囊), which is approved in China as a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for the treatment of stomach pain (gastralgia) and abdominal distension caused by qi stagnation, such as in chronic gastritis and functional dyspepsia. The extract contains active components like valerenic acid, valepotriates, and volatile oils. It acts as an antispasmodic and analgesic on gastrointestinal smooth muscle, and also exhibits sedative and anxiolytic properties, potentially mediated through the modulation of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors, adenosine receptors, and serotonin receptors.
