Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Validispert is an herbal medicinal product containing valerian root extract (*Valeriana officinalis*), primarily used for the symptomatic relief of mild nervous tension and sleep disorders. It is marketed by Cooperation Pharmaceutique Francaise (Cooper) as part of their consumer health portfolio. The active components of the extract, including valerenic acid and valeropotriates, are believed to exert sedative and anxiolytic effects by modulating the GABAergic system. Specifically, these constituents act as positive allosteric modulators of GABA-A receptors and may also inhibit the enzyme GABA transaminase, leading to increased levels of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA in the central nervous system. Validispert is available as an over-the-counter (OTC) product in various European markets.
