Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Valeriana Hevert (marketed as Valeriana Hevert Beruhigungsdragees) is an over-the-counter herbal medicine developed by Hevert-Arzneimittel. It is formulated as a combination of three plant extracts: valerian root dry extract (*Valeriana officinalis*), lemon balm leaf dry extract (*Melissa officinalis*), and passion flower dry extract (*Passiflora incarnata*). This combination is indicated for the treatment of restlessness, nervous tension, and sleep disorders (such as difficulty falling asleep). The therapeutic effects are mediated through multiple synergistic mechanisms, primarily involving the GABAergic system. Valerian and passion flower extracts act as positive allosteric modulators of the GABA-A receptor, enhancing inhibitory neurotransmission, while lemon balm extract inhibits 4-aminobutyrate aminotransferase (GABA transaminase), preventing GABA degradation. Additionally, components of valerian root interact with adenosine A1 and 5-HT1A serotonin receptors to promote sedation and sleep quality without the risk of dependency or morning hangover.
