valethamate

Valethamate is a small molecule anticholinergic and antispasmodic agent used to manage smooth muscle spasms, including those associated with dysmenorrhea, gastrointestinal tract cramping, postoperative pain, tenesmus, urinary and biliary colic. It is commonly used to hasten cervical dilatation during labor. The drug acts as a competitive inhibitor of acetylcholine at muscarinic receptors (antimuscarinic action), blocking cholinergic transmission in ganglia and directly relaxing smooth muscles of the cervix and intestine. This leads to reduced spasms but can also cause typical anticholinergic side effects such as tachycardia, dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, urinary retention, flushing, photophobia due to mydriasis[1][2][3][5][6][7].
