Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Valine is an essential branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) that is not synthesized by the human body and must be obtained through diet or supplementation. It plays a vital role in muscle metabolism, tissue repair, and nitrogen balance. Unlike most amino acids, BCAAs like valine are primarily metabolized in skeletal muscle rather than the liver. In clinical research, valine is being evaluated as a targeted intervention to combat sarcopenia (muscle loss), fatigue, and frailty in patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). It is also a critical component of total parenteral nutrition (TPN) formulations used to support growth and metabolic needs in neonates and critically ill patients.
