Overview

This is a combination of two agents, valproate (also known as valproic acid or sodium valproate) and creatine. Valproate is an anticonvulsant and mood stabilizer primarily used for the treatment of epilepsy, bipolar disorder, and migraine prophylaxis. Its mechanism involves increasing brain concentrations of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), thereby exerting inhibitory effects on neuronal firing. Creatine is a naturally occurring compound involved in cellular energy metabolism, commonly used as a dietary supplement to enhance muscle performance and support neurological function. There are no approved pharmaceutical products combining these two agents; however, their interaction has been studied due to potential metabolic effects—valproate can disrupt creatine metabolism in the brain by causing hyperammonemia or through inhibition of enzymes involved in creatine synthesis and transport[1][2]. This may result in abnormal urinary excretion profiles for creatine metabolites.
