This is a combination of valproic acid, an anticonvulsant and mood stabilizer, and corticosteroids, a class of steroid hormones with potent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties. Valproic acid increases GABAergic neurotransmission in the brain by inhibiting GABA transaminase and succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase, suppresses voltage-gated sodium channels, and modulates signaling pathways involved in neuroplasticity. It is primarily used to treat epilepsy (various seizure types), bipolar disorder (mania), and for migraine prophylaxis[1][2][5]. Corticosteroids such as prednisone or betamethasone act via glucocorticoid receptors to regulate gene expression, leading to reduced inflammation and immune response[9]. The combination may be considered in clinical scenarios where both neurological stabilization (e.g., seizure control or mood stabilization) and immunosuppression/anti-inflammation are required. There is some evidence for using valproic acid alongside corticosteroids to manage psychiatric side effects induced by steroids without discontinuing steroid therapy[6][7].
