Overview

Valproic Acid expanded cord blood stem cells is an experimental cellular therapy developed at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. The product consists of umbilical cord blood-derived CD34+ hematopoietic stem cells that have been expanded ex vivo for seven days in the presence of valproic acid (VPA), a histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor. This expansion process is designed to increase the number of primitive hematopoietic stem cells and lineage-committed precursors, addressing the primary limitation of low cell dose in single cord blood units which often leads to delayed engraftment and increased transplant-related mortality. The therapy is intended for use in adults with high-risk hematological malignancies, such as acute myeloid leukemia and myelodysplastic syndromes, who are undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation with conditioning regimens that include total body irradiation (TBI).
