Drug intelligence / Profile preview
VALPROT 500XR is an extended-release tablet formulation containing a combination of sodium valproate and valproic acid, manufactured by Asian Pharmaceuticals in Nepal. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of epilepsy and various seizure disorders. The drug functions as a broad-spectrum antiepileptic by enhancing GABAergic neurotransmission, likely through the inhibition of 4-aminobutyrate aminotransferase (GABA transaminase), and by modulating voltage-gated sodium channels and T-type calcium channels to reduce neuronal hyperexcitability. Kathmandu University has conducted randomized, open-label, crossover bioequivalence studies in healthy volunteers to compare VALPROT 500XR with innovator products, ensuring its pharmacokinetic profile supports clinical interchangeability and maintains seizure control.
