Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Valsartan + hydrochlorothiazide** is an oral fixed-dose antihypertensive combination of valsartan, a selective angiotensin II type 1 receptor blocker, and hydrochlorothiazide, a thiazide diuretic. Valsartan reduces angiotensin II-mediated vasoconstriction and aldosterone signaling, while hydrochlorothiazide inhibits renal sodium-chloride reabsorption in the distal convoluted tubule, increasing sodium and water excretion. The combination is approved for treatment of hypertension, including use in patients not adequately controlled with monotherapy and as initial therapy when multiple agents are likely to be needed.
