Overview

Valtrate is a naturally occurring iridoid valepotriate compound primarily isolated from plants in the genus *Valeriana*, such as *Valeriana jatamansi* and *Valeriana officinalis*. It is being investigated as a novel therapeutic agent for its potent anti-cancer activities, particularly in pancreatic cancer and glioblastoma. Valtrate's mechanism of action involves the inhibition of the Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription 3 (STAT3) signaling pathway, which is frequently overactivated in various malignancies and contributes to cell survival and proliferation. Additionally, valtrate has been shown to suppress the PDGFRA/MEK/ERK signaling cascade, leading to anti-proliferative and pro-apoptotic effects in cancer cells while exhibiting low toxicity toward normal cells. Although it is a constituent of valerian extracts used in traditional medicine and dietary supplements, in its purified form, it is studied as a targeted small molecule inhibitor in oncology.
