Overview

Valtropin is a biosimilar recombinant human growth hormone product containing somatropin, a 191–amino acid polypeptide identical to endogenous pituitary growth hormone, produced in Saccharomyces cerevisiae by recombinant DNA technology. It was developed by LG Life Sciences and Biopartners as a follow-on biologic to Eli Lilly’s Humatrope, and obtained marketing authorization in the EU in 2006 and FDA approval in 2007 for treatment of pediatric growth hormone deficiency, short stature associated with Turner syndrome, growth retardation in pre-pubertal children with chronic renal insufficiency, and adult growth hormone deficiency.[1][2][3][6][9][10][11] Somatropin acts via activation of the growth hormone receptor, stimulating production of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) and promoting linear growth, protein synthesis, lipolysis, and other anabolic and metabolic effects in multiple tissues.[1][3][5][10]
