Vanadium is a trace mineral and micronutrient that plays a role in the metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids, phospholipids, and cholesterol. It is involved in bone mineralization as well as thyroid and erythrocyte metabolism. Vanadium may act like insulin or enhance insulin's effects by improving sensitivity to insulin in people with type 2 diabetes; however clinical evidence supporting its use for any medical indication is lacking. It has been studied for potential benefits in diabetes (type 1 and type 2), high cholesterol levels, heart disease prevention or treatment of anemia (“tired blood”), water retention (edema), athletic performance enhancement during weight training and cancer prevention. Vanadium supplementation has not been proven effective for these uses in large-scale clinical trials[1][3][4][5]. Excess intake can lead to toxicity affecting multiple organ systems.
