Vanadyl sulfate is an inorganic vanadium salt that exhibits insulin-mimetic properties. It has been primarily investigated for its potential to improve glycemic control in patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus (non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus). Its mechanism of action involves the inhibition of protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPases), which leads to the sustained phosphorylation and activation of the insulin receptor and downstream signaling molecules, such as insulin receptor substrate-1 (IRS-1) and phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K). This enhancement of the insulin signaling pathway promotes glucose uptake in peripheral tissues and inhibits hepatic glucose production. While it has been used in numerous clinical studies and is widely available as a dietary supplement for athletic performance and blood sugar support, it is not an FDA-approved pharmaceutical drug for any medical indication.
