VanaLice

VanaLice is an over-the-counter (OTC) topical gel developed and marketed by GM Pharmaceuticals for the treatment of lice infestations (pediculosis), including head lice, pubic (crab) lice, and body lice. The product is a combination of two active pediculicides: **pyrethrins** (derived from pyrethrum extract) and **piperonyl butoxide**. Pyrethrins function as neurotoxins that disrupt the nervous system of lice by prolonging the opening of voltage-gated sodium channels, leading to paralysis and death. Piperonyl butoxide acts as a synergist by inhibiting the cytochrome P450 enzymes in the lice that would otherwise metabolize and detoxify the pyrethrins. The formulation also incorporates essential oils such as tea tree, coconut, and lemongrass oil. It is indicated for use in adults and children aged 2 years and older and is typically supplied as a kit including a fine-tooth nit removal comb.
