Vancogel

Vancogel is a topical gel formulation of the glycopeptide antibiotic vancomycin, specifically developed for the treatment of complicated skin and soft tissue infections (cSSTI) and the elimination of Methicillin-resistant *Staphylococcus aureus* (MRSA) from open wounds. Developed as a direct-contact therapy, the gel aims to provide high local concentrations of the antibiotic to promote wound healing while minimizing systemic exposure and potential toxicity. Vancomycin, the active agent, exerts its bactericidal effect by binding to the D-alanyl-D-alanine terminus of peptidoglycan precursors. This binding sterically inhibits the transglycosylation and transpeptidation steps of bacterial cell wall synthesis, effectively preventing the polymer cross-linking necessary for cell wall stability and leading to bacterial cell lysis.
