Overview

Aerosolized vancomycin or gentamicin is an investigational inhaled antibiotic treatment developed by Stony Brook University, in collaboration with Nektar Therapeutics, for the treatment of respiratory infections in mechanically ventilated patients, such as ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) and tracheobronchitis. This approach utilizes nebulized delivery to achieve high drug concentrations directly in the lower respiratory tract while minimizing systemic exposure. Vancomycin, a glycopeptide antibiotic, targets gram-positive bacteria by inhibiting cell wall synthesis, while gentamicin, an aminoglycoside, targets gram-negative bacteria by inhibiting protein synthesis. The treatment was evaluated in a Phase 2 clinical trial (NCT00396578) to determine its efficacy in reducing respiratory infection and antibiotic resistance in intubated patients.
