vancomycin + gentamicin + Stimulan Rapid Cure

This intervention is a local antibiotic delivery system being evaluated in a Phase 4 randomized controlled trial at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. It utilizes Stimulan Rapid Cure, an absorbable calcium sulfate antibiotic carrier manufactured by Biocomposites, which is loaded with two established antibiotics: vancomycin and gentamicin. The system is designed to provide sustained local release of antibiotics directly at the surgical site to prevent surgical site infections (SSI) and seroma formation, specifically in women undergoing mastectomy with immediate breast tissue expander placement. Vancomycin targets gram-positive bacteria by inhibiting cell wall synthesis, while gentamicin targets gram-negative bacteria by inhibiting protein synthesis. The calcium sulfate carrier is fully absorbable, leaving no residual material after the antibiotics have been released.
