This is a combination of two drugs, vancomycin and heparin. - **Vancomycin** is a glycopeptide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to the D-Ala-D-Ala terminus of cell wall precursor units, leading to bactericidal activity against many Gram-positive bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). It may also alter membrane permeability and selectively inhibit RNA synthesis[5][7]. - **Heparin** is an anticoagulant that potentiates the action of antithrombin III, thereby inhibiting thrombin and factor Xa activity in the coagulation cascade. This prevents clot formation. The combination may be used in clinical settings such as catheter lock solutions or parenteral nutrition admixtures to provide both antibacterial protection (from vancomycin) and prevention of catheter thrombosis (from heparin)[4]. Both agents retain their respective activities when combined in dilute solution[4]. However, physical incompatibility can occur at higher concentrations or if mixed improperly; precipitation has been reported when administered through the same tubing[3][9].
