The mechanism of action is thought to involve olfactory stimulation that modulates behavioral and physiological pain responses, potentially mediated by the early-maturing olfactory system and its direct connections to the limbic system. This sensory intervention is evaluated as an alternative or adjunct to traditional oral analgesics like sucrose, particularly for infants who are not receiving their mother's breast milk, to reduce pain scores on scales such as the Premature Infant Pain Profile (PIPP).
