Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Varanadi Kashayam is a traditional Ayurvedic polyherbal decoction used mainly for the treatment of obesity, liver disorders, indigestion, rheumatoid arthritis, atherosclerosis, headaches, abdominal lumps, and various metabolic and inflammatory conditions. Composed of 16 herbal ingredients including Crataeva magna (Varana), Strobilanthes heynianus (Karim kurngi), Barleria prionitis (Sveta sairyaka), Asparagus racemosus (Shatavari), Plumbago zeylanica (Dahana), Chonemorpha macrophylla (Morata), and Aegle marmelos (Vilwa), among others, Varanadi Kashayam is believed to work by correcting deranged fat metabolism, stimulating digestive fire, and acting on Kapha and Vata doshas. Mechanistically, preclinical data indicate it reduces monocyte to macrophage differentiation and downregulates proinflammatory cytokine production such as TNF-α and IL-1β, suggesting anti-inflammatory and metabolic effects[6][3][5]. It also exhibits diuretic and anti-lipase activity, which may contribute to its benefits in obesity and metabolic syndrome. It is primarily indicated for weight management, fatty liver, thyroid dysfunction (mainly hypothyroidism), high cholesterol, rheumatoid arthritis, and certain gynecological conditions such as PCOS[1][2][3][4][5][6][7].
