Overview
Vardenafil is a small molecule pharmaceutical drug used to treat erectile dysfunction (impotence) in men. It belongs to the class of phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. Vardenafil works by selectively inhibiting the enzyme PDE5, which increases levels of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) in the smooth muscle cells of the corpus cavernosum during sexual stimulation. This leads to increased blood flow into the penis and facilitates erection. Vardenafil is structurally similar to sildenafil but differs slightly in its molecular structure and pharmacological profile. It is taken orally and has a relatively short duration of action compared to tadalafil but somewhat longer than sildenafil. Developed by Bayer.
