Overview

Varicella vaccine is a live-attenuated viral vaccine designed to prevent chickenpox, an infectious disease caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV). The vaccine is typically derived from the Oka strain of VZV, which was originally isolated in Japan and attenuated through serial passage in cell cultures. It works by stimulating the production of VZV-specific antibodies and T-cell responses, providing long-term immunity. While primarily used in pediatric populations, it is also indicated for susceptible adults and healthcare workers. In the context of clinical research, such as studies conducted at Hôpital Foch, the virus is also the subject of serological testing to evaluate immunity levels in specific populations like pregnant women to guide post-partum vaccination strategies.
