Overview

The Oka/Biken live attenuated varicella vaccine is a viral vaccine developed by The Research Foundation for Microbial Diseases of Osaka University (BIKEN) for the prevention of varicella (chickenpox). It is based on the Oka strain of the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), which was originally isolated and attenuated by Dr. Michiaki Takahashi at Osaka University in the 1970s. The vaccine works by inducing both humoral (antibody) and cell-mediated immune responses against VZV, providing long-term protection against chickenpox. It is typically administered as a subcutaneous injection and is widely used in Japan and other regions, serving as the parent strain for most varicella vaccines used worldwide, including those produced by Merck and GSK.
