The live attenuated varicella zoster virus vaccine is a biologic product derived from the Oka strain of the varicella-zoster virus (VZV). Traditionally used for the prevention of varicella (chickenpox) and herpes zoster (shingles), it is being investigated as an unconventional immunotherapy for hematologic malignancies. Developed and manufactured by the Research Foundation for Microbial Diseases of Osaka University (BIKEN), the vaccine is administered to induce antitumor immunity in patients with adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL), chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), and myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). The proposed mechanism involves the stimulation of VZV-specific memory T cells, which may enhance the recruitment and activation of tumor-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs), such as HTLV-1 Tax-specific CTLs in ATLL patients, thereby providing a therapeutic effect against the underlying malignancy.
