Overview
This is a live-attenuated varicella-zoster virus (VZV) vaccine, specifically utilizing the Oka strain, which was evaluated in clinical trials sponsored by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). The vaccine is designed to prevent herpes zoster (shingles) in HIV-infected children who have a history of primary varicella (chickenpox) infection. Unlike standard varicella vaccines used for primary prevention of chickenpox, this formulation is being evaluated as an immunotherapeutic booster to enhance VZV-specific cell-mediated immunity in immunocompromised populations. By administering the live-attenuated virus to individuals with prior exposure, the vaccine aims to bolster the immune response and prevent the reactivation of the latent virus that causes shingles.
