The varicella zoster vaccine is a live attenuated biologic agent designed to prevent herpes zoster (shingles) by stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies and T-cell responses against the varicella-zoster virus (VZV). This specific vaccine was evaluated in a Phase 2 clinical trial (NCT02408159) sponsored by Innovaderm Research Inc. to assess its safety and immunogenicity in patients with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis who were candidates for biologic therapy. The study aimed to determine if vaccination 4 to 6 weeks prior to initiating immunosuppressive biologic treatments could safely provide protection against shingles, a condition for which these patients are at increased risk due to the potential for viral reactivation during therapy.
