Overview
**Varicella zoster vaccine live** is a live attenuated vaccine containing the Oka/Merck strain of varicella-zoster virus (VZV), used to prevent varicella (chickenpox) and herpes zoster (shingles). **Varivax** is indicated for active immunization against chickenpox in individuals 12 months and older, eliciting cell-mediated and humoral immune responses to VZV. **Zostavax**, with a higher viral dose, was indicated for preventing shingles and post-herpetic neuralgia in immunocompetent adults aged 50 and older, though it has been largely replaced by the recombinant Shingrix vaccine since 2017 due to superior efficacy and duration. Developed and manufactured by Merck, it is administered subcutaneously or intramuscularly as a 0.5-0.65 mL dose after reconstitution.[1][2][5][7]
