Overview

The Varicella-zoster virus mRNA vaccine is an investigational vaccine candidate developed by Walvax Biotechnology utilizing messenger RNA (mRNA) technology. It is designed to prevent infections caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), which is responsible for both varicella (chickenpox) and herpes zoster (shingles). The vaccine works by introducing mRNA that encodes for a specific VZV antigen into the body, prompting host cells to produce the viral protein and subsequently triggering a robust immune response, including the production of neutralizing antibodies and the activation of T-cells. This approach aims to provide long-lasting protection against VZV reactivation and associated complications. As of early 2024, the vaccine is in Phase 1 clinical trials to assess its safety and immunogenicity profile.
