Drug intelligence / Profile preview
VAS101 is a patented, highly concentrated topical curcumin gel formulation developed by Vascarta. It utilizes a proprietary transdermal delivery technology designed to enhance the bioavailability of curcumin both locally and systemically, overcoming the poor absorption seen with oral administration. Curcumin is known for its anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antioxidant, and anti-sickling properties. Preclinical studies have shown that topically applied VAS101 achieves sustained drug levels in plasma and blood cells, resulting in effective pain relief and potential stabilization of red blood cells. The drug is being investigated for use in chronic knee osteoarthritis (OA) to alleviate pain and improve function—especially for patients who cannot tolerate oral NSAIDs—and in sickle cell disease (SCD) to reduce chronic pain, stabilize red blood cells, lower inflammation, and potentially decrease opioid use during vaso-occlusive crises[1][2][3][4][5][6].
