Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Vasalgel is a non-hormonal, long-acting, and reversible male contraceptive hydrogel. It consists of a high molecular weight polymer, styrene-alt-maleic acid (SMA acid), dissolved in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). When injected into the vas deferens, the polymer precipitates upon contact with the aqueous environment of the lumen, forming a soft, flexible, and tissue-adherent hydrogel. This hydrogel acts as a mechanical barrier (occlusion) that blocks the passage of sperm while allowing the transit of water-soluble molecules. The contraceptive effect can be reversed on demand by injecting a sodium bicarbonate solution, which dissolves the hydrogel and restores sperm flow. Originally developed by the Parsemus Foundation, Vasalgel is currently being developed by NEXT Life Sciences as part of the Plan A Male Contraceptive System, which is in Phase II clinical trials.
