VasaPlex is a preclinical-stage vaso- and cardioprotective biologic drug developed by Samba BioLogics (originally originated at the University of Vermont) for the treatment of myocardial infarction, reperfusion injury, and low- or no-reflow following percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). It is a non-covalent protein complex composed of recombinant hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) and polyclonal immunoglobulin G (IgG). VasaPlex acts as an agonist that signals through the hepatocyte growth factor receptor (c-Met) and triggers the phosphorylation of the tyrosine-protein kinase RYK (an orphan Wnt co-receptor) on vascular endothelial cells. This dual signaling pathway increases vascular integrity, protects endothelial cells from ischemic injury, and preserves cardiac tissue jeopardized by ischemia-reperfusion injury.
