VasaPlex-F2 is a preclinical-stage, vaso- and cardioprotective biologic drug candidate being developed by Samba BioLogics (in collaboration with the University of Vermont) for the treatment of myocardial infarction, reperfusion injury, and low- or no-reflow following percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Chemically, VasaPlex-F2 is a non-covalent protein complex consisting of basic fibroblast growth factor (FGF2), hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), and non-specific polyclonal immunoglobulin G (IgG). This complex is designed to improve the pharmacokinetic profiles of the growth factors, protecting them from proteolysis and rapid clearance. VasaPlex-F2 acts as an agonist on the hepatocyte growth factor receptor (MET), the Wnt co-receptor 'related to receptor tyrosine kinase' (RYK), and fibroblast growth factor receptors (such as FGFR1), promoting endothelial cell survival, preserving vascular integrity, and maintaining epicardial electrical conduction in ischemic cardiac tissue.
