Vascu-Guard

Vascu-Guard is a bovine pericardium surgical patch designed for use in peripheral vascular reconstruction and repair. Developed by Synovis Life Technologies (now a subsidiary of Baxter), the patch is processed using glutaraldehyde to cross-link collagen fibers, which enhances its tensile strength, reduces immunogenicity, and minimizes the risk of aneurysmal dilation. It is primarily indicated for carotid endarterectomy, as well as iliac, femoral, and renal artery reconstructions. Unlike synthetic alternatives such as PTFE or Dacron, Vascu-Guard offers handling characteristics similar to natural tissue, lower rates of suture line bleeding, and high resistance to infection, making it a preferred choice for surgeons aiming to reduce the incidence of restenosis and other post-operative complications.
