Drug intelligence / Profile preview
VasoActive is a topical gel formulation of phentolamine mesylate developed for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED). The product utilizes a proprietary Skin Sync Technology (SST) designed to facilitate the transdermal delivery of phentolamine, a non-selective alpha-adrenergic antagonist. By inhibiting alpha-1 and alpha-2 adrenergic receptors in the vascular smooth muscle of the corpus cavernosum, the drug promotes vasodilation and increased blood flow, which are essential for achieving and maintaining an erection. Developed by VasoActive Pharmaceuticals (a subsidiary of Bio-Key International), the drug faced significant regulatory challenges in the early 2000s. It was initially marketed as an over-the-counter product, leading to an FDA warning letter in 2004 because phentolamine is a prescription-only substance and the ED indication requires clinical validation for safety and efficacy. Consequently, the development and marketing of the product were discontinued.
