Overview

Vasostatin-1 (VS-1) is a bioactive peptide corresponding to the N-terminal fragment (residues 1-78) of Chromogranin A (CgA), an acidic glycoprotein found in the secretory vesicles of neuroendocrine cells. Research, primarily conducted at the San Raffaele Scientific Institute, has identified VS-1 as a potent inhibitor of tumor metastasis and angiogenesis. Its mechanism of action involves the preservation of the VE-cadherin-dependent endothelial barrier function, which effectively inhibits the transendothelial migration and extravasation of circulating tumor cells. In animal models of melanoma and mammary adenocarcinoma, systemic administration of VS-1 has been shown to significantly reduce the formation of lung colonies. Additionally, VS-1 exhibits anti-angiogenic properties by inhibiting vessel formation in various in vitro and in vivo assays.
