VAX-GI is a preclinical-stage vaccine candidate being developed by Vaxcyte to prevent shigellosis (bacillary dysentery) caused by *Shigella* bacteria. The vaccine is produced using Vaxcyte's proprietary XpressCF™ cell-free protein synthesis platform, which allows for the production of complex proteins and antigens that are otherwise difficult to manufacture. The program is a collaboration with the University of Maryland, Baltimore, and has received significant funding through research grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). VAX-GI aims to provide broad protection against the various species and serotypes of *Shigella* that cause severe diarrheal disease globally.
