Overview
vax-SPIRAL is a trivalent inactivated vaccine developed by the Finlay Vaccine Institute in Cuba for the prevention of leptospirosis. The vaccine is composed of inactivated whole cells of three *Leptospira interrogans* serovars: Canicola, Icterohaemorrhagiae, and Pomona, which represent the most prevalent strains associated with human leptospirosis in the region. Formulated with an aluminum hydroxide adjuvant to enhance immunogenicity, vax-SPIRAL is indicated for active immunization in individuals aged 15 to 65 years who are at high risk of infection due to occupational exposure (such as agricultural or sanitation workers) or residence in endemic areas. It was the first vaccine of its kind developed in Latin America and has been part of the Cuban national immunization program to control outbreaks.
