Overview

Vaxigrip + Fluviral + Intanza refers to a group of trivalent inactivated influenza vaccines (TIV) evaluated in a clinical trial led by the University of Alberta. Vaxigrip (Sanofi Pasteur) and Fluviral (GSK) are standard split-virion vaccines typically administered via intramuscular injection. Intanza (Sanofi Pasteur) is a specialized split-virion vaccine formulation designed for intradermal administration using a micro-injection system. These vaccines contain purified hemagglutinin and neuraminidase antigens from three influenza strains (typically two A subtypes and one B lineage) as recommended annually by the WHO. The University of Alberta study specifically compared the immunogenicity of the intradermal route (Intanza) against the intramuscular route (Vaxigrip or Fluviral) in solid organ transplant recipients to determine if the intradermal delivery, which targets the antigen-presenting cells in the dermis, provides a superior immune response in this immunocompromised population.
