Overview

VaxSyn HIV-1 is a recombinant gp160 (rgp160) protein vaccine candidate developed for the prevention and treatment of HIV-1 infection. It is produced using a baculovirus expression vector system in lepidopteran (insect) cells. The vaccine consists of the full-length envelope glycoprotein precursor of the HIV-1 IIIB strain, which is intended to stimulate the immune system to produce both humoral (antibody) and cellular (T-cell) responses. Historically significant as the first HIV-1 vaccine candidate to enter human clinical trials in the United States, VaxSyn HIV-1 was extensively studied in the late 1980s and early 1990s. While early-phase trials demonstrated the induction of memory B cells and anamnestic responses, the candidate was eventually discontinued after failing to demonstrate sufficient protective efficacy in broader clinical development.
