VBI-2901e is a trivalent, investigational pan-coronavirus vaccine candidate developed by VBI Vaccines. It is designed to induce broad and durable immune responses against multiple coronavirus strains by expressing the spike proteins of three betacoronaviruses—SARS-CoV-2 (the virus responsible for COVID-19), SARS-CoV (responsible for severe acute respiratory syndrome), and MERS-CoV (responsible for Middle East respiratory syndrome)—on the same particle. The vaccine uses an enveloped virus-like particle (eVLP) platform technology and is formulated with an aluminum phosphate adjuvant. In Phase 1 clinical studies, VBI-2901 demonstrated high and sustained neutralizing antibody responses against a range of COVID-19 variants including Wuhan, Delta, Beta, Omicron BA.5, as well as animal coronaviruses such as bat and pangolin variants. The safety profile was consistent with known eVLP-based vaccines without significant adverse events[1][5][6].
