Overview

VBI-S is an investigational intravenous drug composed of phospholipid nanoparticles, primarily formed from phosphatidylcholine and micelles of soybean oil encapsulated by a monolayer of phosphatidylcholine. It is designed to treat hypovolemia due to septic shock, particularly in patients who have not responded adequately to standard fluids and vasopressors. The mechanism of action involves the reversible absorption and redistribution of nitric oxide (NO) within the bloodstream. By creating hydrophobic spaces that absorb excess NO, VBI-S reduces its bioavailability without interfering with its production or essential cellular interactions. This approach addresses relative hypovolemia caused by overproduction of NO in septic shock, leading to increased mean arterial blood pressure (MAP), improved organ function, and reduced need for vasopressors. Clinical trials have shown that VBI-S can rapidly elevate MAP and improve survival rates in severe septic shock patients with no reported severe drug-related adverse effects[1][2][3][4][5][6].
