VBY-129 is a small-molecule inhibitor of cathepsin proteases currently in preclinical development by Virobay for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. Cathepsins are a family of lysosomal cysteine proteases that play critical roles in intracellular protein degradation and cellular homeostasis. In the context of Alzheimer's disease, specific cathepsins are implicated in the pathological processing of amyloid precursor protein and the promotion of neuroinflammatory responses. VBY-129 is designed to cross the blood-brain barrier and selectively inhibit these proteases to potentially reduce amyloid burden and neurodegeneration.
