Drug intelligence / Profile preview
VCF Contraceptive Gel is an over-the-counter (OTC), hormone-free vaginal contraceptive product developed and marketed by Apothecus Pharmaceutical Corp. The product contains 4% nonoxynol-9, a small molecule surfactant that acts as a spermicide. Its mechanism of action involves the physical disruption of the sperm (spermatozoa) cell membrane upon contact, which leads to the immobilization and death of the sperm cells, thereby preventing fertilization. Administered vaginally via pre-filled applicators, the gel is effective immediately upon application and provides contraceptive protection for up to one hour. It is designed to be virtually undetectable by either partner and is used as a safe and effective method for birth control and pregnancy prevention.
