Overview

VCL-IPM1 is a monovalent DNA plasmid vaccine developed by Vical Incorporated for the prevention of pandemic influenza, specifically targeting the H5N1 strain. The vaccine consists of a plasmid encoding the hemagglutinin (HA) surface protein from the A/Vietnam/1203/2004 (H5N1) influenza virus. It was designed to be administered using the Biojector 2000 needle-free system, which facilitates the delivery of the DNA into host cells to induce both humoral (antibody) and cellular (T-cell) immune responses. The development of VCL-IPM1 was part of a broader pandemic preparedness initiative, but clinical development was discontinued following early-phase testing and the company's subsequent restructuring.
