VCL-NB01 is an experimental DNA plasmid-based veterinary vaccine developed by Vical for the prevention of necrotic bovine pododermatitis, commonly known as foot rot, in cattle. The vaccine consists of a DNA plasmid encoding the leukotoxin (LKT) of *Fusobacterium necrophorum*, which is the primary causative agent of the disease. Upon intramuscular injection, the plasmid is taken up by the animal's cells, leading to the expression of the LKT protein and the subsequent induction of a protective immune response. This DNA-based approach was intended to offer improved efficacy and safety compared to traditional killed-bacteria vaccines (bacterins) by specifically targeting a key virulence factor of the pathogen.
