vedolizumab (Millennium Pharmaceuticals)

Vedolizumab (formerly known as LDP-02 and MLN0002) is a humanized monoclonal antibody that specifically targets the alpha4beta7 integrin receptor on leukocytes. By binding to this integrin, vedolizumab inhibits the migration of memory T-lymphocytes into gastrointestinal tissue, thereby reducing inflammation associated with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. The drug was originally developed by LeukoSite (later acquired by Millennium Pharmaceuticals), in collaboration with Genentech, for intravenous and subcutaneous administration in acute IBD. Its mechanism offers gut-selective immunosuppression, aiming to minimize systemic immune effects[1][2][5].
