Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Vegavit Cardio is an oral dietary supplement developed and marketed by SPEY for the management of dyslipidemia and mild to moderate hypercholesterolemia, as well as for reducing cardiovascular risk. It is formulated as a fixed-dose combination tablet containing 200 mg of *Monascus purpureus* fermented rice (red yeast rice) and 10 mg of policosanols. The red yeast rice component contains monacolin K, which is chemically identical to lovastatin and acts as a competitive inhibitor of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase, thereby blocking endogenous cholesterol synthesis. Policosanol, a mixture of long-chain aliphatic alcohols derived from sugarcane wax, complements this effect by activating AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), which downregulates HMG-CoA reductase activity and enhances the expression and processing of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptors. Together, these ingredients work synergistically to improve the blood plasma lipid profile and reduce oxidative stress.
