Overview

VEGFq is a G-quadruplex-forming DNA oligonucleotide designed to target the promoter region of the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) gene. Developed by researchers at the University of Louisville, VEGFq binds specifically to the complementary C-rich strand of the genomic VEGF promoter via strand invasion. This binding stabilizes the G-quadruplex structure, leading to transcriptional inhibition and downregulation of VEGF expression. In preclinical models of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), treatment with VEGFq has been shown to inhibit cell proliferation, reduce cell invasion, and induce autophagic cell death by attenuating downstream AKT and ERK 1/2 signaling pathways.
